Litigation involving the apartment complex security is one of the most common types of security related liability lawsuits and if you are a property manager, you know that you need to take apartment complex security seriously. The safety of your residences is usually shouldered on you.

Apartment security is often overlooked by many tenants prior to the move in. Often they do not realize that the threat is just on the other side of the door. People in apartment complexes are constantly on the move are always bringing into the complex individuals that would look for an opportunity to commit a crime.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year monitoring is essential for an apartment security system and should be tested monthly to make sure everything is working properly.

SMOKE DETECTORS

Monitored smoke detectors are very essential to an occupants of apartment complexes. Many apartments require a commercial fire system for the property. Those that do not need to have them installed so that they are notified in the event of a fire and the smoke detectors need to be monitored with the security system. Smoke detectors in your apartment are a requirement and you should check them regularly!

The NFPA recommends that smoke detectors be changed out every 10 years. Many apartments are older than that and often damaged when painting an apartment. You need to make sure they work properly if uncertain, install new ones. Most smoke detectors cover only a 10 square foot area so make sure you have adequate units to cover your area.

ALWAYS TEST YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. However, many fire stations are not instructing people to check them weekly.

CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

Carbon Monoxide is odorless, tasteless and is a harmful killer that often times leaks in an apartment. There also can be multiple areas in the apartment that are often over looked.

You should place detectors next to furnaces, space heaters and any device that uses a fuel that burns. Every apartment should have a carbon monoxide detector installed and monitored.
